  1. Dear Evan Hansen

tours and experiences in New York, Dear Evan Hansen
First up on our round-up of musical theatre-inspired tours and experiences in New York is a modern stage classic: the heartbreaking Dear Evan Hansen.

While so much musical theatre deals in lighthearted fare, Dear Evan Hansen explores weightier themes such as loneliness and mental illness. Currently playing at the Music Box Theatre, the critically acclaimed show concerns titular teen Evan who, suffering from depression and anxiety, fabricates a friendship with a late schoolmate in order to form a connection with their grieving family.

This emotional production won the 2017 Tony for Best Musical, among others.

  2. Oklahoma!

tours and experiences in New York, Oklahoma!
A trip to Broadway is essential on any list of things to do in New York, partly because it offers you the chance to be transported to other parts of the country!

Oklahoma!, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and one of America’s most beloved musicals, is one such example. It first hit Broadway in 1943 and spawned a hit film version in 1955. It’s set in the state of the same name and depicts rivalry between cowboys and farmers via a story of a farm girl, Laurey, and her two suitors: a farmhand, Jud and a cowboy, Curly.

This new, simple and stripped back production from David Fish, showing at the Circle In the Square Theatre, takes on a darker tone than previous versions.

  3. Beautiful: The Carol King Musical

    Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Another great thing about musicals – and particularly those inspired by the back catalogs of esteemed singers – a chance to share amazing songs with new generations.

Iconic American artist Carol King’s career spans seven decades, and she found global fame in the 70s. Her discography includes hits like It’s Too Late, You’ve Got a Friend and Jazzman. Meanwhile, she’s also penned hits for the likes of Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, and The Drifters.

Currently running at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, this warmly received bio-jukebox musical recounts Carol’s early life and career. It recently featured 1000 Miles singer Vanessa Carlton in the starring role.

  4. Wicked

Last up on our list of theatre-related tours and experiences in New York, a show that helped make the likes of Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth household names: Wicked. It started on Broadway back in 2003. Telling the backstory of the Wizard of Oz, it is currently playing at the Gershwin Theatre.

It’s not the only appearance Broadway makes in the Wizard of Oz mythology: before the hit 1939 film, and after the original 1900 book by L. Frank Baum, Dorothy made her Broadway debut with the 1903 staging of the Wizard of Oz musical. (Although, the show actually premiered the year before at the Chicago Grand Opera House).
