Orfeo ed Euridice
New to the dramatic musical landscapes of opera? Orfeo ed Euridice at the Metropolitan Opera House might be a good introduction, as it lasts only 1 hour and 25 minutes with no interval. (To put that into perspective, Agrippina at the same venue lasts three hours and 45 minutes!).
A moving portrait of love and grief, Orfeo ed Euridice was composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck. It tells the story of Orpheus, a legend of ancient Greece, and his attempt at saving his late wife from Hades.
The opera, which dates back to 1762, is sung in Italian with English, German, Spanish and Italian subtitles.
